Getting a new tattoo is exciting, but how you care for it during the first few weeks is just as important as choosing the right artist. Proper aftercare helps your tattoo heal properly, keeps your tattoo looking vibrant, and reduces the risk of complications.
At Linden Street Tattoo Company in Fort Collins, we want every client to leave feeling confident about caring for their new tattoo. Here's what you can expect during the healing process.
Day 1: Protect Your New Tattoo
Your artist will cover your tattoo before you leave the shop. Follow their instructions on when to remove the bandage or protective wrap.
Once it's time to remove it:
Wash your hands thoroughly.
Gently wash your tattoo with Dr. Bronner's Unscented Baby Castile Soap and lukewarm water.
Gently pat your tattoo dry with a clean paper towel. Avoid rubbing the area.
Once your tattoo is completely dry, apply a very thin layer of Magic Balm Unscented.
At Linden Street Tattoo Company, we recommend washing your tattoo with Dr. Bronner's Unscented Baby Castile Soap and moisturizing with Magic Balm Unscented throughout the healing process. Both products are fragrance-free, gentle on healing skin, and available at the shop if you'd like to pick them up before heading home.
It's completely normal to notice redness, mild swelling, or a small amount of plasma during the first day.
Days 2–4: The Healing Begins
Your tattoo may still feel tender and look slightly red. Some areas may begin to feel tight or dry.
Continue to:
Wash your tattoo gently at least twice a day or if it gets dirty.
Apply a very thin layer of Magic Balm Unscented as directed by your artist.
Wear clean, loose-fitting clothing.
Avoid touching your tattoo unless you're washing or moisturizing it.
Do not soak your tattoo in water. Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, rivers, or direct sunlight while it's healing.
Days 5–10: Peeling and Itching
This is the stage that surprises many first-time clients.
Your tattoo may begin to:
Peel
Flake
Feel itchy
Look dull
Don't worry, this is completely normal!
As the peeling finishes, your tattoo may look cloudy or slightly dull for a short time. This is a normal part of healing, and your tattoo will continue to brighten as your skin fully recovers.
Do not scratch or pick at peeling skin. Pulling off flakes can remove ink that hasn't fully settled into the skin. Keep the area clean and moisturized according to your artist's instructions.
Weeks 2–4: Almost Healed
Most of the peeling has finished, and your tattoo should start looking brighter again.
Although it may appear healed on the surface, your skin is still repairing underneath.
Continue to:
Moisturize as needed.
Avoid swimming and soaking until your tattoo is fully healed.
Continue keeping your tattoo out of direct sunlight, and once it's fully healed, apply sunscreen whenever it will be exposed.
Weeks 4–6: Fully Healed
For most people, the outer layers of skin are fully healed within four to six weeks.
At this point, your tattoo should feel smooth and comfortable.
Even after healing, sunscreen is one of the best ways to keep your tattoo looking sharp for years to come.
Everyone heals a little differently, so your tattoo may take slightly more or less time to fully heal depending on its size, placement, and your body.
What Should You Avoid?
While your tattoo heals, avoid:
Swimming pools
Hot tubs
Lakes and rivers
Baths
Direct sunlight
Tight clothing that rubs against the tattoo
Scratching or picking at peeling skin
Following these guidelines will help your tattoo heal as cleanly as possible.
When Should You Contact Your Tattoo Artist?
Healing looks slightly different for everyone, but if you have questions, please don't hesitate to reach out. We'd much rather answer a question early than have you worry unnecessarily.
If you experience excessive redness, severe swelling, increasing pain, or signs of infection, contact your healthcare provider promptly.
Professional Tattoo Aftercare Makes a Difference
The healing process doesn't end when you leave the tattoo shop. A little patience and proper aftercare go a long way toward keeping your tattoo looking its best for years to come.
If you're getting tattooed at Linden Street Tattoo Company, we'll send you home with detailed aftercare instructions and answer any questions you have before you leave. And if something comes up while your tattoo is healing, don't hesitate to reach out. Our goal is for you to love your tattoo not only the day you get it, but for years to come.
