If you like the look of a full tattoo sleeve but don’t necessarily want one large design connecting everything together, a patchwork sleeve might be more your style.

A patchwork tattoo sleeve is made up of individual tattoos placed together. Each tattoo stands on its own with space between the pieces, and together they build into a full sleeve.

Do Patchwork Tattoos Have to Match?

Nope.

Your patchwork tattoos can follow the same style or theme, but they definitely don’t have to. Some people stick with all American traditional tattoos, all black and grey, or a certain subject. Other people collect tattoos they like and let the sleeve come together naturally over time.

You can mix styles, subjects, colors, flash and custom tattoos, or even collect work from different artists.

You don’t need to have your entire finished sleeve mapped out before you start, but it’s worth thinking a couple tattoos ahead. An artist can also help you plan around the tattoos you already have and anything you might want to add later.

How Much Space Should Be Between Patchwork Tattoos?

There isn’t one exact amount of space that works for everyone.

The right spacing depends on the size and shape of the tattoos, where they sit on your body, the style of the work, and the overall look you’re going for. Some people like more negative space between their tattoos, while others prefer their pieces closer together.

A patchwork sleeve doesn’t have to follow one color palette. You can keep everything black and grey, go completely color, or mix the two.

You don’t have to fill every gap right away.

As a patchwork sleeve grows, you’ll naturally end up with smaller spaces between some of the larger tattoos. Those can eventually become great spots for smaller flash designs, fillers, or custom pieces made specifically for that space.

Waiting to fill those spots can give you more options for what you’re able to add later.

Sometimes the weird little spot you’ve been saving ends up being the perfect home for your next tattoo.
